In early April of this year a joint investigation was conducted by the Alabama Alcohol Beverage Control board and the Fort Payne Police department. A minor, age 17 was used to attempt to make illegal purchases of tobacco and cigarettes in the Fort Payne area. In one afternoon approximately twenty stores were randomly checked and out of those 20 locations four different stores did sell tobacco to the minor ABC operative. Fort Payne investigators then identified the person who made the illegal sales and obtained warrants for their arrest from the municipal court in Fort Payne.
The business itself can possibly receive a fine from the State of Alabama up to $400 on each count. The fine to the individual can be up to $500 plus court cost and possible jail time.
The Alabama Beverage Control conducts these type operations routinely across the state.
